Crafting a Bespoke Oak Media Unit with Curved Sliding Doors

When a client approached us with the idea of creating a bespoke media unit, they had one key request: it needed to feel timeless, with warm natural materials and clean lines. The result was a beautifully tailored piece in solid oak, complete with handcrafted curved sliding doors—a standout feature that blends elegance with functionality.

Understanding the Brief

The client wanted a media unit that would not dominate the room but instead offer refined storage and seamlessly house their television and AV equipment. Oak was chosen for its durability and soft golden tones, providing warmth and texture to the space.

We worked collaboratively through the design process, producing initial sketches and drawings before refining the details. The curved doors were a particular point of interest—they needed to operate smoothly, conceal clutter, and become a focal point of the piece

The Craftsmanship Behind the Curves

Curved doors are technically demanding and require a deep understanding of timber movement and construction. Each door was carefully shaped in the workshop, then hand-finished to ensure a perfect slide and flush fit when closed.

The curves bring softness to the otherwise linear form, while showcasing the beauty of the oak grain in a dynamic and tactile way. Inside, custom shelving and cable management keep everything discreetly organised.

Engineering a Smart, Subtle Solution

One of the key technical challenges was that the sliding doors couldn’t curve around the back of the cabinet, as this would block essential airflow for the AV equipment.

To overcome this, we designed a bespoke tambour-style system where the curved oak doors glide gently back along the sides, blending seamlessly into the form of the cabinet without enclosing the rear. It’s a quiet detail, but one that required precise geometry and thoughtful craftsmanship — balancing performance, elegance, and material integrity.

A Lasting Addition to the Home

The finished media unit now sits proudly in our client’s living space—a perfect balance of form and function. It complements the architecture of the room while offering practical use, and the craftsmanship ensures it will last for decades to come.

This commission reflects what we love most: working closely with clients to create bespoke, high-end furniture that is tailored to their lifestyle and space.
